Firstly can we say a big thank you to all those who have donated, sponsored, supported or helped us in any way over the last year, it must be said it has been a struggle financially, but we have managed to get through it with your help!
Kent Messenger Group
Exciting news from the fund-raising office.
On Monday the 2nd of February I took a call from Leo Whitlock the editor for Canterbury, Whistable and Herne Bay Kent Messenger, I had nominated Kent Kids Miles of Smiles to be selected as their charity for 2009, and we were successful.
We were chosen by a panel of judges after readers and listeners were invited to nominate their favourite cause. Entries flooded into the newsroom making the task of their panel of judges tremendously difficult.
Chairman of the judges, Gazette editor Leo Whitlock, said: “As the postman arrived each day and we delved into our email in boxes, our task got harder and harder. Our readers and listeners let us know about scores of truly inspirational people in this area doing selfless and wonderful things for other people.
“In reality, it was virtually impossible to choose but we felt that Kent Kids Miles of Smiles was a worthy winner and deserved wholehearted backing.”
As charity of the year, Kent Kids Miles of Smiles will benefit from a whole host of Gazette and kmfm-backed events ranging from the adrenalin fuelled to the more cerebral Big Quiz later this year.
This is Fantastic news for Kent Kids Miles of Smiles, the extra advertising that this will generate will put us in the public eye and should help to raise our profile. We must make the most of this year to ensure we maximise the benefits from this kind of support.
All events by either Kent Kids Miles of Smiles or the Kent Messenger can be found on our web site
Liz Baxter (Head of Fund-raising)
As we are their new charity of the year KMFM will be holding several fundraising events throughout the year on our behalf. So we hope as many of you as possible will come and support us both and make this a good year for us! The listed events so far are:
1st May - A Big Quiz held at the Kent University Sports Centre in Canterbury, 60 teams to take part. See local paper for entry.
7th June - Abseil down Fisher Towers at Canterbury’s Christchurch University.
Water Walk or Zip Wire - in the Autumn, date still to be arranged.
Brave Young Climber
We would like to mention a young man called Matthew Laslet. At the age of 14 without any prompting from anyone else, he has decided to fund-raise for Kent Kids Miles of Smiles, you may feel that this is nothing unusual or extraordinary, until you learn that as this newsletter was going to press he was climbing 4,100 metres up Mount Kinablu in Borneo.
Matthew has never done anything like this before and was given special permission to miss school, he had given a PowerPoint presentation to his school to ensure that they would help out and sponsor him and give both him and us their full support!
Kent Kids Dreams The 26th of September last year saw the opening of our new charity shop called ‘Kent Kids Dreams’ in Whitstable at 21 Oxford Street. It is being run by Shirley. Please come along and support us, we have already had numerous customers complimenting the layout of our shop, and we are always looking for any suitable donations. Also, anyone that is wishing to volunteer some time to help out at the shop please get in touch. Thank you! |

FOOTPRINTS 9/5/99 to 9/5/09
As you can see from the heading above, Footprints will have been open for 10 years this May. When we first opened in 1999 we were able to accommodate 6 children for respite care/holidays. Now 10 years on, 2 extensions and countless renovations later we are able to cater for 6 permanent, and up to 6 respite children, not bad when you consider that it all started with two people in a garden shed!!
Welcome We have a new child at Footprints called Miles who is settling in well, we are getting him ready to join the other children at St Nic’s school and are sure that he will live up to his nick-name “Smiley Miley”
Christmas! It wasn’t a very good time for us this year as we had a lot of poorly children and staff, but we made the most of it and had a lovely time. Canterbury Fire Fighters arrived early to hand out presents, then Jo the cook served up a delicious Christmas dinner!
NEW MINI BUS!! October last year saw us taking possession of a brand new 17 seater mini bus. The Sunshine bus was donated to us from The Variety Club of Great Britain. We would like to say a huge thank you to Steve Farley Electrical Ltd for sponsoring the mini bus. This has enabled us much more flexibility when taking the children on outings and of course they all love going on the ‘new bus’. As you will see from the photo above a few of us went to the London Club for the presentation, our more mature readers might recognise Sir Henry Cooper who was asked to hand over the bus to us.
OFSTED OFSTED, our governing body arrived last November to carry out an inspection. Unfortunately although we were commended on our excellent care of the children, we failed to meet standards regarding record writing and other matters. The Compliance team arrived February and left pleased that all requirements have now been met. If you would like to view our OFSTED report, it can be found at Footprints just inside the front door
Congratulations To all members of staff that have acquired their NVQ’s, well done!!
New Staff Everyone at Footprints and Redwalls would like to say goodbye to Sam and wish her luck in her new job.
Welcome to all our new staff who if not started with us yet, soon will be, both at Redwalls and Footprints.
Staff Structure You will now be able to put names to faces here as we have recently put up photo boards inside the main entrances of both of our houses, showing all members of staff and the staff structure.
Vacant Posts We are in desperate need of a weekend cleaner for 3 hours a day, also weekend carers, if you are looking for a job or to volunteer please ring and speak to Laura. |

Permanent Residents Our well known and much loved resident Amin has turned 21! We hired a hall and partied the night away. A big thank you to Geoff, Matthew Lombart & Neil Duncan (Elvis) for giving up time to perform for Amin! Our residents are doing well so far this year and Amin, Tijen, and India are all enjoying their presents from Christmas and the houses new sensory items.
CSCI We believe the most important thing for us to let you know about first is our CSCI Annual Service Review. The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) are basically the people who check up on us to ensure that we are all doing things correctly. Our report states that “...the home is still providing a good service and know what further improvements they wish to make...” we think this is a brilliant achievement and would like to thank all the staff for their hard work! Keep it up guys!
Christmas! As we all know, time whizzes by, who could believe that Xmas has been and gone again for another year? We all had a great time eating, socialising and opening our presents. Our young adults received lots of lovely presents from lots of different people and are very grateful. We all went to “The Whistlestop” restaurant in Whitstable for our Christmas lunch where we thoroughly enjoyed our xmas meal and found the restaurant to be friendly and helpful.
Canterbury Round Table Our guys here are currently building up their skills and maintaining their competitive flair in their preparation to beat the Canterbury Round Table members at our Wii Championships. Canterbury round Table kindly donated a Wii to Redwalls and dared to challenge us to a competition. I hope they have plenty of tissues to wipe up their tears when they lose, as they’re going to need them!
Availability If you would like to come and stay with us or know somebody who would, we still have two respite rooms available. Please try to ring and book in advance as dates are limited! We have so much fun here the rooms do tend to get booked up quickly, although we can usually take emergency and short notice respite (subject to availability) Please contact Melissa (our registered care manager) on 01227 780 796 now to book.
Thank You!
Finally on behalf of the Trustees, they would like to thank all the staff for their dedication, care and hard work especially over the Christmas period. It is very much appreciated and known that they work over and above the call of duty. Many thanks to you all once again!! |
